Y La Bamba was one of the highlight acts at this year’s Fairwell Festival. She and her band transformed a sun-scorched field of twang-drunk country fans into a sea of bobbing heads and writhing bodies. It was the kind of set that deserves a bigger stage.

Pickathon Festival
The Pickathon Experimental Music Festival runs Aug. 1-4 at Pendarvis Farm in Happy Valley. The event has built a reputation for being one of the most kid-friendly and environmentally sustainable festivals in the country.
Stainless steel cups replace the plastic ones found at most fests and you can swap in your token for plates of Portland-curated food from modern Mexican spot Astral PDX or plant-based Japanese place Obon Shokudo.
Po Ramblin' Boys kicked off the music with a set that honors Pickathon's bluegrass roots. Later, Thao & The Get Down Stay Down rocked the Galaxy Barn with jangly funk that proudly flies its freak flag.
William Byrd Festival
This summer marks the return of this Portland-based celebration of England's greatest glamping set up Renaissance composer. The festival will feature services sung by Cantores in Ecclesia and lectures from scholars Kerry McCarthy, William Mahrt and Katie Bank.
The festival opens not with a traditional choral concert but with an illustrated recital featuring songs played on period instruments such as violins, violas da gamba (an older cousin of the modern cello) and recorders.
Mark Williams, informator choristarum at Magdalen College, Oxford will play an organ recital and direct the closing concert, featuring a number of Byrd motets that celebrate the 400th anniversary of his death in 1623.
